In Taiwan, May 1st is Labor Day. Previously, only workers were day off, while teachers were required to work. However, according to the "Labor Standards Act," teachers and staff of private kindergartens and daycare centers are also considered workers, meaning elementary, junior high, and high school teachers must also work, leaving their children without care.
With the implementation of the "Enforcement Act for Memorial Days and Festivals," Labor Day will become a national statutory holiday starting May 1, 2026. This is certainly a good thing, but for teachers with children, this holiday still has its shortcomings…
