Not Equate to Virture

Small Talk:

A person's achievements are often not directly related to their moral character. We frequently see highly educated individuals committing despicable acts.

First, during my university years, a professor in my department, in order to obtain his doctorate as quickly as possible, forced students to analyze data for his dissertations. As a result, some students who refused to analyze the data were failed by him.

Second, news reports of university professors fabricating data to publish in international journals are commonplace. For example, in 2014, SAGE Publishing discovered that Chen Zhen-yuan, a former associate professor at National Pingtung University of Education, was suspected of academic fraud, and therefore retracted 60 papers he had published in the "Journal of Vibration and Control". This incident also led to the resignation of the then Minister of Education.

Furthermore, media reports frequently feature professors whose moral character is questionable. For example, in 2025, four professors at National Changhua University of Education were involved in sexual harassment and assault of female students, a veritable Me Too incident in academia.

So, does having higher levels of knowledge or a higher position necessarily equate to having higher moral character? Of course not!
